ADAPTERS, CONVERTERS, AND TRANSFORMERS
Having the correct adapter is crucial when you are traveling out of the United States, but figuring out the right adapter and configuration can be confusing. Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters carries adapters for all major travel destinations, plus converters and transformers, and we will make sure you leave for your trip with the knowledge necessary to stay plugged in. Here’s a quick crash course:
– Adapters are used to connect your device to the wall outlet. Because different countries have uniquely shaped sockets, an adapter is necessary to plug in our standard two- and three-pronged plugs.
– An ungrounded adapter is for two pronged items and can be used to charge most cell phones, tablets, and cameras.
– A grounded adapter is for three pronged items and is needed to charge most large items including laptops and appliances.
– You will need a converter or transformer if your appliance is not dual voltage. Check your devices to see what they have written down for voltage. This should be written on the back of the charger or on the body of the appliance. If you see 100-240V, this means that it is dual-voltage and you will not need an additional converter or transformer to convert voltage. Many newer electronics have this capacity. If you just see 110V, then you will need an additional converter (for electric motor appliances) or transformer (for electronics).
– A converter will reduce 220V to 110V for use in countries operating on 220V. Most hairdryers need a converter or you will blow a fuse. Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters does sell a travel hairdryer that is dual voltage and easy to pack. Other items requiring a converter include hot pots, heating pads, clothing steamers, and electric blankets.
– A transformer is mostly used for larger electronic devices such as televisions, stereos, and radios. However, you will need a transformer if you plan to pack an electric shaver or curling iron if they are not dual voltage. We also carry travel-sized curling irons and straighteners which enables you to tour without a transformer. –Ellen, May 2015
