A day or so before we started back, as we were walking, I noted that it was hard to pick the high point of the trip. The train ride was amazing, but so was the 12-hour mail tour, and so was Uluru, especially the sunrise walk and the sunset dinner during which dingoes paced around the tables. Any of those could have been the high point depending on the mood we were in when answering the question. We were in total agreement, though, that there was no low point. Everything was as good or better than we expected.
I would say that Uluru would be a must-do for someone wanting to get a feel for Australia. The entertainment–didgeridoo playing, aboriginal dancing, and an astronomy lesson–were well worth watching and listening to. There were also dingoes just outside of the lights. Since we were at a table on the edge, we got to see them up close but not too personal. There are also enough different options for seeing it–you don’t have to walk around it as we did–that it would be suitable for all ages and for varying degrees of mobility.
If one is into cities, Sydney and Melbourne are quite different from Perth. Melbourne has a very cosmopolitan European feel to it. Perth felt more like something out of a Western–more of a frontier feel.
Thanks for all you did in making it possible, Julie! -Jean & Blaine, Australia, 2014
