Antarctica: Our Time with the Penguins
“When we got to Antarctica we were in the northern part of the peninsular. We were very early in the southern hemisphere spring, and the ice was too great to go too far south. Despite that we did get to land and get up closeto a number of different penguin colonies.
We saw two different type of penguins, the gento and the chinstrap. The gentos have a large black band around the head while the chinstrap have a thin black band under the head. At the time of the spring the penguins were just coming back to nest. They nest in groups, but the different types do not mix. It was so early that they had not started to make their nests as they would wait until the snow had melted and they were able to make the nests on the rocks.“
