JULIE’S VIEW: CAN I GO TO HAWAII?

Yes, Virginia- you can travel to Hawaii. But you need to be Covid tested first.

In the two client-led Zoom meetings I held last week the topics of greatest interest were: can we travel safely and will travel still be fun? Yes, and yes!

Here are some tidbits from those conversations:

Can we travel safely?

Yes, as long as you don’t expect rules and risks to be different, I think you can employ enough safety protocols to make travel as safe as going to the grocery store.

In the airport and on your flight, I recommend double masking and that you bring your own stash of wipes, hand sanitizer, snacks, and masks. We now carry seat covers too!

Getting TSA precheck is also helpful. The check-in lines are shorter and quicker, and you don’t have to take off shoes, jackets, or unpack computers.

Where can we go for a ‘normal’ travel experience?

The short answer is nowhere. If you go somewhere that feels ‘normal’, it probably isn’t very safe.

I do think, nonetheless, that you can get out of town and have unique and wonderful experiences- just plan to wear a mask and do some advanced planning like booking tours, museum visits, and dinners (so you don’t miss out due to limited capacity).

Most important is to set expectations that are within your comfort zone right now. While I often do out-of-the-box things on vacation- activities that push me beyond my normal- I wouldn’t plan for anything too crazy right now. This year has been stressful enough and getting away should be a true break from all of that.

Where do I get my pre-travel Covid test and what is the timing of getting results?

These tests may seem tricky but so far, we’ve felt they have been pretty reliable. You can get tested at Med Express, CVS, Walgreens, and a number of other sites. There are online apps available to collect test results and Marlena, our Packing Specialist, received her results on the app 24 hours before she got a call from the doctor.

Hawaii seems like an exotic getaway right now, what are the requirements?

Hawaii rolled out its Safe Travel Program months ago and has been successful with it, even as entry requirements keep changing. You have to have a negative Covid test before entry to any of the Hawaiian Islands and then you may have to have additional tests if you hop around. One way to mitigate the number of tests is to visit only one island, or plan your trip in a direction that doesn’t require additional tests after the first entry (like from any island to Oahu). Currently, you are not required to take a Covid test to reenter the US.
