The most common question I get from customers is “what is your lightest weight luggage“. All airlines have weight restrictions on checked bags and many on carry-on bags, too. Wheeled luggage is made differently than it was a decade ago- the technology that they use to make luggage has come extremely far, so lightweight, wheeled luggage is now easier to find than it used to be. That being said, here’s a little food for thought and something that Julie and I think about when we decide what collections to carry. How light is too light?
The lightest weight bags will most likely not be the most durable. In order to make it uber-lightweight, there has to be less of the materials that are protecting your belongings. Depending on these materials, if there is less structure it is more likely that your bag will get damaged, especially if it is being checked. If you travel frequently, the “abuse” your luggage takes will be far greater so we feel the more casual traveler can get away with a less-structured bag. Good quality hard-sides offer a lightweight option, while still remaining incredibly durable for someone that travels more frequently. Julie and I weigh these concerns and bring in collections that we believe will hold up, while still being lightweight.
Below are four of our lightest weight, but super durable bags-
1) Rimowa Salsa Air– Our lightest weight bag is this hard-side collection with its carry-on weighing an amazing 4.2 lbs. It is 100% pure virgin polycarbonate, which is a very durable plastic. This is a great piece for someone who travels more frequently, while still wanting to be as lightweight as possible.
2) Victorinox Victoria– A sleek 4-wheel spinner carry-on weighing only 5 .3 lbs.
3) Eagle Creek Activate– 5 lbs 9 oz for this 22″ with convertible backpack straps.
4) Eagle Creek Load Warrior– This is one of our best-selling collections from Eagle Creek with their 22″ wheeled duffel weighing in at 5 lbs 13 oz and their 20″ at 5 lbs 8 oz. These are both expandable should you need more space in your carry-on on your way home. –Lindsay, January 2015
